Possible risks
Know the risks of eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty)
Like any other surgery, there are of course risks associated with choosing to have eyelid surgery, such as risks associated with anesthesia, swelling, bruising, bleeding from incision lines, infection, poor wound healing, changes in skin sensation and persistent pain.
Being aware of the possible risks will help you to make an informed decision to have your surgery. Your plastic surgeon will discuss all risks in detail with you during your consultation and before surgery.
Additional eyelid surgery risks can include:
- Dryness of the eyes
- Difficulty closing the eyes
- Outward rolling of the lower lid
- Light sensitivity
- Temporary or possible permanent changes to vision and in rare cases, blindness
Blepharoplasty candidates
Are you a candidate for eyelid surgery?
Your plastic surgeon will give you an honest assessment and let you know if you are a good candidate for eyelid surgery, but in general you should be in good overall health with no medical conditions that can impair healing, must be a nonsmoker or willing to quit smoking, must not have any serious eye conditions and have realistic expectations.
Depending on where the problem areas are, you can elect to have upper eyelid surgery, lower eyelid surgery, or both at one time. This will be discussed during your consultation.
